Some days you plan a perfect outing. Other days, you throw on your rain boots, grab the leashes, and head out anyway. Because when you have a newly rescued girl, now your newest daughter, who has spent too much of her life cooped up, a little pouring rain is not going to stop you.

That’s exactly how Ava’s first big outing came to be.

If you’ve been following along, you already know about Ava. Our sweet 5-year-old puppy mill survivor from Mississippi, who joined Max and Maisie and completely stole our hearts from day one. She spent years in wire crates, never knowing what it felt like to simply explore. So when we decided to spend the day antiquing in the charming Hudson Valley town of Rhinebeck, New York, we weren’t about to leave her behind.

Here’s everything we discovered about navigating Rhinebeck with a dog by your side.

Why Rhinebeck Is Worth the Rainy Drive

Rhinebeck is one of those towns that feels like it was designed for slow, happy wandering. The main street is lined with independent shops, historic buildings, and cozy cafes. The kind of place that makes you want to duck in and out of doorways all afternoon. And honestly? The rain made it feel even more atmospheric. Very Hudson Valley.

Parking is easy, the blocks are short, and most of the action is concentrated right around Market Street, which means you won’t be hauling a wet dog across town.

Our Dog-Friendly Stops

Pause Dog Boutique - 6423 Montgomery St

This was our first stop and it should be yours too. Owner Sammy is the real deal. She carries high-quality treats (great for food-sensitive pups!), leashes, beds, coats, and toys, and will genuinely help you find the right thing for your specific dog. Ava, who is still learning that the world can be a kind place, was welcomed with patience and warmth. Five paws.

Periwinkles at Rhinebeck - 24 E Market St

A delightful little shop that blends pet gifts and owner-friendly finds, and has a dog bakery in the back. We picked up a little treat for Ava to celebrate her first real adventure. She was very pleased with this decision. welcomed with patience and warmth. Five paws.

Beekman Arms Antique Market & Gallery - 28 W Market St

A large, multi-room antique market right in the heart of town with a wide range of pieces. Fine antiques, quirky finds, and plenty in between. Call ahead to confirm their dog policy before you arrive.

Bread Alone Bakery & Cafe - 45 E Market St

A beloved Hudson Valley institution. Slow-fermented artisan breads, excellent lattes, and pastries that make rainy days feel like a treat. On drier days the outdoor seating is perfect for dogs. On our rainy day, we grabbed coffee to go and found a dry overhang while Ava sniffed every single thing within a 10-foot radius.

A Few Tips for Dog-Friendly Antiquing

Call ahead. Antique shops vary on their pet policies. A quick call saves everyone the awkwardness.

Bring a towel. On a rainy day, a dedicated dog towel in the car is non-negotiable.

Let them sniff. For a dog like Ava who spent years with almost zero sensory stimulation, a town like Rhinebeck is like an entire world opening up. Let them take it slow. That is the point.

The Bottom Line

Rhinebeck is genuinely one of the most dog-friendly small towns in the Hudson Valley. The walkable layout, the welcoming shops, and the laid-back vibe make it a wonderful place to bring your pup, rainy day and all.

Ava got her first bakery treat, her first boutique visit, and her first real adventure. She walked, she sniffed, she looked up at us with that big smile of hers. And for a dog who spent years not knowing what it meant to be loved, that felt like everything.

Here’s to many more.
